Perotinus Magnus,
 
Pérotin [perɔ'tɛ̃], französischer Komponist, * um 1165 (oder 1155/60), ✝ um 1220 (oder 1200/05); neben Leoninus der erste namentlich bekannte Komponist von mehrstimmiger Musik und als dessen Nachfolger Hauptmeister der Notre-Dame-Schule in Paris. Perotinus erweiterte den zweistimmigen Satz der Organa im »Magnus liber organi de gradali et antiphonario« zur Drei- und Vierstimmigkeit, bearbeitete die Discantuspartien, indem er sie rhythmisch straffte, und komponierte neue Abschnitte (Klauseln) in Discantussatz hinzu, in dem alle Stimmen mensuriert und in rhythmisch eindeutiger Modalnotation aufgezeichnet sind (ein wichtiger Schritt zur Entstehung der Motette).
